On November 16 and 17, thirty-five grade 7 and 8 students participated in the Knox Volleyball Tournament in Bowmanville. The tournament consisted of teams from Christian schools around Ontario and even a few from New York state. Beacon entered an A and a B team in the AAA division of this tournament in both the girls and boys divisions. This meant that our teams were competing against schools Beacon’s size or bigger. Our B teams played well and gained some valuable volleyball experience.
The girls’ A team was a little inconsistent during the round robin portion of the tournament, but really came together once the playoffs began. They won a thrilling quarterfinal match against the host Bowmanville team in three games and then convincingly won their semifinal match versus John Knox Brampton. In the final the girls played fantastic against Trenton to win the tournament.
The boys’ A team showed glimpses of fantastic volleyball during the round robin portion of the tournament, but also struggled with some inconsistent play. In the playoffs, however, no team was able to gain more than 20 points on them as they cruised to the championship. Ironically, they met the Beacon “B” team in the quarterfinals. After relegating their classmates to the role of spectators they played fantastic team volleyball in wins over John Knox Brampton and Laurentian Hills – Kitchener.
Great work Beacon Volleyball! This week many of the students will be participating in the SDCH Invitational. The girls’ tournament is on Thursday and the boys’ tournament is on Friday. The girls Niagara District tournament is on December 1 at Beacon. The boys’ Niagara District tournament is on December 8 in Hamilton.
