November 17-20, 2008

Dear Parents,

This week we will be discussing families.  If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at home (905-937-6932).  I have received about half of the family pictures, baby clothes, birth weight and bulletins.  Please send them in as soon as possible.

This week we have started a new math unit.  We will be discussing and working with direction words (above, beside, inside, outside, under, over, etc.)  Try including these words in your every day activities at home or in your travels.

Our letter this week is Mm.  Marvelous foods such as macaroni and muffins are part of our discussion on Mm words.  Please send in something that begins with the letter Mm on Wednesday.  The students are doing very well with their letters and sounds.

Sight words this week are... we, will, go, to, the.  I did not send home a sight reading book for this past week.  I found the book I used quite challenging.  We worked on it in class and that is as far as I will go with it.

Today we met a puppy named Benjamin.  Ask your child about him.

Please do not forget that Friday is a day off from school.  This is so the volunteers can set up the school for the bazaar on Saturday.  The teachers will be busy working on their report cards.

Have a great week!

In His service,

Irene Bootsma

Personal Statement from Irene Bootsma

Lord, I pray that when your little children enter my classroom, they will be able to feel the love of Jesus through my teaching, speaking and actions. I pray that they will feel safe and very special in my classroom. Help me to let them discover your beautiful creation, understand the effects of sin and yet experience the hope of salvation. May they know that they belong to you. Help me to encourage them to use their gifts for service in your kingdom. I pray that you will give me the strength and patience I need for my call of teaching.

                                                                             Amen

?Every day children learn,

Every day they grow?

unfolding, playing, & discovering,

that they are a special part of God?s world.?

Welcome to the new school year!  I want your child to have a fun and successful year in Kindergarten.  Please feel free to contact me if there are situations that need to be discussed.   The best times to reach me at school are from 8:00 a.m. -8:30 a.m. and 11:35 a.m. -1:00 p.m.  I am always willing to schedule a conference at any time! (School?s Phone Number ? 905-937-7411)ext. 116

School Hours

School begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 11:30 a.m.

Attendance
A successful school experience is the responsibility of the children, the parent, and the school.  Your child's progress, both academically and socially, is influenced to a great extent, by daily participation.  Regular attendance without tardiness is a key.

School Entry

The junior and senior kindergarten students will enter their classrooms via the front doors, in the front playground.  The students will be dismissed through the same doors at 11:30 a.m.

Transportation
If your child will  be  leaving the school by another means of transportation, you must send a written note or contact the office at 905-937-7411. Do not rely on your child to tell us this information, because children often become confused and relay information incorrectly. If no written note or phone call is received, your child will be sent home by his/her usual method of transportation.

Home/School Communication
Please examine your child?s backpack each day. I will send important notes, schoolwork, etc. by way of your child, in your child?s HOME/SCHOOL COMMUNICATION ZIP LOCK BAG.  These bags will come home daily and are to be sent back each day.  Please send all notes, money and other important things you want me to find, in your child?s zip lock bag.  Be positive and value the work your child has done at school. (Please look on the School?s Web page for your weekly school newsletter and my weekly letter.  Please let me know if you do not have access to the internet, so that I can give you a hard copy of the newsletter.)

Snacks
We will have a small snack each morning @
10:05 a.m.
Students provide their own snacks. (Please remember the nut free policy.)

Birthdays and Treats
Birthdays are Wonderful!  Simple treats may be sent to school (or brought by you) on your child?s birthday. Sending a birthday treat is optional.  Birthday treats are appreciated, but certainly not expected.  If your child?s birthday falls in July or August, we will celebrate their half birthday (Six months before their birthday).

Monthly Calendar
Please watch for a new monthly calendar to come home at the end of each month.  This calendar will let you know what day your child will need to fill the Mystery Box, the skills we will be covering for the month, and special events that will be happening in our classroom and school.

Book Orders                                                                                                                                                  Your child will have the opportunity to order books for your home library each month.  The book orders are from Scholastic Books and will be sent home each month attached to the monthly calendar.

Share Leader (Show and Tell) MYSTERY BOX
Sharing Time will begin in September.  Your child?s sharing day will be on the monthly calendar.  Your child will have a turn usually one time each month.  When your child is the Share Leader, he or she will be my special helper for the day, be our line leader all day and get to bring an item in the Mystery Box to share with the class.   Please help your child find one item to bring for his or her share day.  Ideas:  a favorite book, stuffed animal, photo, etc.  The purpose behind show and tell is to give your child an opportunity to share with others, be the special helper for the day and practice speaking before a small group.
NOTE: Please call ahead and let me know if you plan to bring a pet for show and tell so that I can prepare the office staff and the students with this information.

Welcome to my Kindergarten class.  I am very excited to be your child's Kindergarten teacher this year and I consider this calling to be a true blessing from God.  I am supported by my husband Wil, our four children and a wonderful christian community.  I graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from Wilfrid Laurier University and a teaching degree from Brock University.  I continued with my studies at Redeemer University and have completed my Christian Teacher's Certificate. I enjoy reading, quilting, cross stitching and card making.

I am looking forward to a wonderful year of discovering the wonder of God's creation, together with your children.

                                                In His service,

                                                Irene Bootsma
