Secondary School News

Another school year is under way.  At our opening chapel yesterday we worshipped together and heard Mrs. Brooks speak on our theme this year from Galatians 5:1.  Our theme is “2 What R U Yoked?”  Students will be challenged to consider what things in their lives “yoke” them to a sinful life, as opposed to being free in Christ.  We look forward to developing this theme further this year.

Students are signed up for classes we the guidance department has been working with students if they want to switch classes.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s courses, please call the school.  Mrs. Brooks is working with the grade 9-11 students and Mr. Venema is looking after the grade 12 class.  Please check the guidance section of the website for helpful information regarding colleges/universities, as well as interest tests.

Class trips will be held next week.  Every student should have taken home information that includes the cost of the trip, contact information, an itinerary, and a permission form.  If you haven’t seen the information yet, please talk to your child, or call the school for more information.  The magazine sale has been going for a few days.  The office has extra forms, and if you have any questions please call Mrs. Kapinga-Gruning at the school.

The Fall athletics schedule is being finalized.  Copies will be on the website by the week after trips (September 15).  Your child will also be given a hard copy of their teams’ schedule once the team has been chosen.

Teachers have been working hard updating their individual websites.  Most are up and running already and all will be by the end of the week.  The secondary school staff is making a commitment to our parents to have our sites updated by Monday evening of each week.  We are also encouraging email contact between teaches and parents.  I have asked staff to keep parents informed if their child is not keeping up with the work load, and we are encouraging parents to email us if you have any concerns.  The phones still work, but we are finding email a better, quicker way to communicate with families on an ongoing basis.

We will be starting our Select Band and Club Choir when we get back from trips and things return to normal.  Practices for Select Band will be Monday and Wednesday morning before school, and Club Choir practices will be during the school day.

Mrs. Gerritsma’s Reflections
What a joy to see all the students, parents, and grandparents at the opening chapel this morning, chatting, praising, and celebrating Christian education together. Please continue to pray for a wonderful school year, filled with education that will teach our children what they need to know to influence culture for Christ.

We hope all parents are able to attend this very valuable evening! We will begin with a session on Internet Safety for all parents, followed by sessions with each classroom teacher and the middle school staff. These 20 minute sessions will offer an opportunity for the classroom teacher to share curriculum and expectations, and for parents to ask any questions they may have.

ROOM PARENTS REQUIRED for 2008/09 School Year
Each year the PTA tries to arrange to have a designated room parent for each classroom teacher at the elementary school. If you would like to get to know and stay in touch with your child's teacher and class activities, why not sign up for this volunteer duty.  Some of the things a room parent may do are:  help arrange drivers for class trips, arrange for extra help for a special activity (Japan Day, baking cookies, etc).  Keeping the teacher and class in your prayers daily, perhaps sending an encouraging card from time to time, or arrange someone to do yard duty for the designated teacher.  Also, remembering the teachers birthday with a small gift and celebration (date will be supplied). These are only suggestions, there are no rules.  Please call Rita Langendoen at 905-562-1764 if this sounds fun to you.  (Email bernlangendoen@aol.com)
Hope to hear from you. Signing up with a friend makes it even easier!
