For more than eighty-five years Concordia College has provided educational opportunities for individuals with nothing more than a dream. Founded by the vision of Dr. Rosa Young, whose idea that the improvement of the lives of blacks through education was possible, Concordia still stands as testament to that ideal.
Concordia is one of over 100 historically black colleges and universities in the United States and the only black Lutheran college in North America. Concordia is a private college affiliated with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The campus is located in a growing 22-acre site in northeast Selma, Alabama, and is 43 miles west of Montgomery and 90 miles south of Birmingham.
Concordia’s mission is to educate students according to the teachings of the Christian faith for lives of responsible leadership and service in the church, community, and the world. The college engages each student in programs and activities, which identify and meet the unique needs of each student: spiritual, academic, social and physical.
Concordia makes a college education affordable by working with each student. All Concordia students receive financial assistance. All or part of the assistance for some students is in the form of institutional grants and aid and may be designated as recognition for excellence in academics, athletics or music. Other financial support includes grants and student employment.
Students are given the opportunity to participate in intercollegiate sports including: football, soccer, basketball for men and women, baseball and softball. The college also has an active intramural program that includes football, basketball and volleyball. Students are also given an opportunity to participate in a marching band, music ensemble and college choir.
