Concordia College Selma is introducing a new project, “The Ethics-Education-Empowerment Initiative,” a publicly-funded program targeting the high drop out rates in the Black Belt Region. The Initiative is aimed at finding and promoting programs in the 12 key Black Belt counties that help students stay in school.

The Initiative, housed on the campus of Concordia College, will:

o        target middle school aged children, however children of all ages will benefit;

o       develop a resource network and clearinghouse of stay in school-dropout prevention projects, programs, activities in the Black Belt, the greater southern region, and the nation. The resource clearing house will be available to teaching professionals, parents, students, community organizations, and individuals via a web page, a toll free number, and newsletter;

o       a “Stay in School” campaign that highlights the benefits of succeeding in school and completing their education. Young people will be the voices and faces of this campaign (public service announcements, drama, poetry, songs, posters, etc), addressing the urgency of Staying in School. Prizes will be awarded to participating middle schools;

o       sponsor local and regional stay-in-school conferences; and

o       produce a documentary highlighting the stories of students and families who have overcome difficulties to succeed in school and life.

For more information, please contact Mr. William Dickerson-Waheed, Project Director or Ms. Cynthia Johnson, Administrative Assistant at 334.874.5700, ext 19795 or toll free at 855.230.2261.
