Life in the Church

Our discipleship journey calls us to do many great things in the name of Christ, but some of the most important things we do occur behind the scenes. These sometimes unnoticed responsibilities ensure a healthy, vital congregation that is able to equip and empower individuals to follow Jesus Christ.

 

Key spiritual gifts: Administration, Discernment, Giving, Leadership, and Helping

 

Bus Driver (NEW)

Drive the church bus to bring students to Sunday a.m. worship and/or faithspring and return them home afterward, drive the church bus for Collegiate/Wesley events when requested by groups.

 

Computer Lab Volunteer (NEW)

Work with the Coordinator of Technology to maintain the computer in the computer lab.

 

Office Volunteers

Help the office staff with various tasks such as assembling mailings, The Communicator, bulletins, and answering the phones.

 

Lay Member to Annual Conference (June 5-8, 2010)

Represent the congregation at the Iowa Annual Conference held toward the beginning of June.

 

Photographer

Help take pictures at various church events as needed by the Coordinator of Communications.

 

Softball Team (FAM)

Collegiate/Wesley fields a slow-pitch softball team in the Ames Interfaith Softball League. Open to ages 14 and up.

 

Website Volunteer

Work with the Coordinator of Communications to develop and/or maintain the church website.

 

Administrative Ministries

 

Administrative Council

The governing body of Collegiate UMC and Wesley Foundation is made up of chairpersons, at-large members, staff, and members of the WF Board. Help lead the congregation in long-range planning and in carrying out its program so that people are received into fellowship, encouraged and strengthened in their relationship with God, and supported as they seek to live as Christian Disciples.

 

Committee on Lay Leadership

Help to identify, develop, and deploy  the gifts and strengths of individuals within the congregation. Evaluate and monitor leadership in the congregation while providing support to leaders who need it and celebrating the service and accomplishments of leaders. 

 

Endowment Board

Help manage Collegiate/Wesley’s endowment and generate new gifts to the fund.

 

G. S. Nichols Scholarship Board

Help manage the fund named in honor of former pastor which aids seminary students with a Collegiate/Wesley connection.

 

Program Cluster Chairpersons (LEAD)

The administrative functions of each program cluster are overseen by the Program Cluster Chairperson. The foremost duty of the chairperson is to help the church meet the primary task of making disciples through the particular focus of each cluster (see p. 3). It also involves visioning, budgeting, recruiting, and communicating. For 2010, we are looking for chairpersons for Sending to Serve and for Nurturing in the Faith.

 

Staff-Parish Relations Committee

Help support the pastors and other staff so that these people can work effectively in managing the ministries of the congregation. Help oversee the employment decisions of the congregation.

 

Finance Committee

 

Finance Committee

Help propose, raise, manage, and distribute the financial resources of the congregation to support and strengthen the mission and ministry of the church. Help people understand the meaning of Christian stewardship and the need to practice it in life.

 

Money Counter

Work in pairs to count Sunday offering and prepare the deposit.  Complete confidentiality is required.

 

Stewardship Team

Assist the Finance Committee in developing and promoting a responsible, ministry driven, stewardship campaign that culminates each fall during Consecration Sunday. Help plan the Consecration Sunday worship and the brunch that celebrates the event.

 

Trustees/Property Board

 

Board of Trustees/Property Committee

Help supervise and maintain all property belonging to Collegiate/Wesley so the ministries of the congregation can be effective.

 

Annex Care Team

Help with minor maintenance at the Annex.

 

Annex Cleaning Team

Help with the custodial work and general cleaning of the Annex.

 

Fall and Spring Cleanup Volunteers (FAM)

Help with a general cleanup around the church properties including flower beds, lawn areas, and parking lots.

 

Garden (Green Thumb) Team

Design, plant, and care for annual and perennial plantings and shrubbery on the church property during the growing season.

 

Handyperson and Helper Pool

Help with special work items as identified by the Board of Trustees and the Property Committee.

 

Parking Monitors

Monitor all the church parking lot areas for unauthorized usage and other violations, etc. Help develop and maintain signs and markings.

 

Sign Team

Help maintain and replace the existing signs in and around the building. Develop new signage to increase the level awareness in and around the building.

 

Technical/Professional Pool

Individuals ready and willing to share their special technical and or professional expertise when the Trustees/Property need advice or direction. Examples: Electrician, Structural Engineering, Architecture, Real Estate, Legal, etc.

 

Western Property Team

Help manage and care for the Western Properties; the Annex and the space around it.

 

United Methodist Women (UMW)

 

United Methodist Women is an organization for women who seek spiritual growth and a supportive community, and is especially focused on study and missions.

 

Contemporary Books

Help review a book and lead a discussion, or volunteer to host a study at your home, or help provide snacks and refreshments.

 

Fellowship Groups and Circles

Host or help coordinate a monthly fellowship group or circle that provides spiritual group, supportive community, and mission programming for its participants.

 

Holy Tearers

Make comforters to be distributed to families who are served by the youth on their summer mission trip.
