Faith in Action

Putting our faith into action in our individual lives and in our "group life" on a local, national and universal level. Weekly, seasonal, short and long term.

Saturday Service Projects

As the saying goes, "think globally, act locally." Once a month, the Wesley Foundation community joins together to participate in different service projects at a variety of local and surrounding area non-profit organizations.

Some projects that we have done in the past include: serving food at Children and Family Urban Ministries, painting at the Emergency Residence Project, making scarves for inner-city kids in Des Moines, collecting food for Mid-Iowa Community, and serving a meal at Food at First.

We love to learn about new opportunities and ways to work in a partnership with surrounding organizations and communities, so if you are already a volunteer or somehow involved with a community organization who is seeking volunteers, let us know! Stay posted in the online newsletter and your e-mail for upcoming projects!

Winter & Spring Service-Learning (Mission) Trips

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has" ~ Margaret Mead

Wesley Foundation students and staff are passionate about service-learning experiences that address local, domestic, and global community issues. We offer trips over both winter and spring breaks. There have been a variety of experiences over the last few years including projects in Chicago and the San Francisco Bay area, hurricane Katrina relief work and intergenerational work-trips to Mexico.

If you have a passion for a particular faith and justice issue, for a particular community or organization, or have a vision for a trip you would like to see happen, contact us!

Assisting with Worship

Do you like to serve communion? Read scripture? Sing a solo?  Greet people at the doors?  Do a childrens' time?  We are always looking for ways to incorporate students into worship.  Contact Jim for more information.  Have an idea that isn't listed above?... we can help you find a way to do it!

Teaching Sunday School

Miss seeing little kids? Be a Sunday School teacher! This is not your traditional Sunday school... so teachers only need to make a 3-4 week commitment! We particularly need teachers who are good with computers, video games, and technology. Openings are available each semester and for Vacation Bible School in the summer. Contact Dianna Nelson for more information.

Traveling Worship Team

Would you like to be involved with sharing a fresh voice of faith from the college community with other churches around Iowa? Contact Jim
to get involved with our traveling worship team.

Wesley Foundation Board

The Wesley Foundation Board is made up of church members and students who care about campus ministry and help make it happen.  Look for board members at welcome picnics, faithspring, Finals Week Breakfasts... anywhere they can lend a hand.  Interested in being on the board?  Contact Craig Ogilvie for more information.

Interested in Seminary?

We routinely have seminary representatives visit.  They can answer questions and help you discern if seminary is for you.  Watch your email for more information about specific opportunities.  For a more informal discussion, please contact Campus Minister Jim Shirbroun.
