Band
Private lessons on any band instrument are available at DCS through our band teacher, Mrs. Rachel O'Donnell. Lessons can be scheduled before, during or after school hours on Wednesdays. Teachers and parents work together with Mrs. O'Donnell to choose the best time, if a student will be taken out of class.
Students who play an instrument may join the band, wether they take lessons at DCS or from an outside instructor. Mrs. O'Donnell directs a combined band on Monday afternoons, which includes students from DCS, Our Redeemer and St. Andrews schools. A spring concert showcases the combined band. Our DCS band also performs for the Christmas program.
Students in grades 6-8 are encouraged to participate in the solo/ensemble contest in April. Together with their teacher, they will learn and master a selected piece from the state list. Performances will be judged at the Music Festival. They also learn 3 pieces to be played with a mass band, made up of band students from 7 different schools. The mass band performs at an evening concert at the Music Festival.
Strings
Violin and viola lessons are available through our instructor, Mrs. Diana Benti. Students may begin violin lessons at a young age, using the Suzuki method. Other teaching methods are combined with Suzuki as students progress. Lessons are scheduled on Mondays. Beginning students in primary grades are asked to have a parent present for their lesson, so the concepts can be re-inforced at home.
Middle and advanced students meet for ensemble/orchestra rehearsals as scheduled. Performance opportunities include nursing homes, churches and school programs. Students in grades 6-8 are also encouraged to participate in the solo/ensemble contest in April.
Piano & Guitar
Piano lessons are available from both Mrs. Benti and Mrs. O'Donnell. Mrs. O'Donnell is also available for guitar lessons.
