Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12

Kindergarten Teacher

Welcome to our kindergarten!  Our room is a busy place, full of hands on learning opportunities suitable for the 5 and 6 year old child.   Classroom learning involves the whole child:  spiritual, academic, emotional, social and physical.  Over all modes of developing, each student is encouraged to grow as a child of God.

Hi!  I am Susanne Nelson, kindergarten teacher at Delavan Christian School.  As an early childhood teacher, I have taught in a variety of settings and programs.  This is my 13th year year as kindergarten taeacher at DCS.  I enjoy the energy and enthusiasm of the young child.  Each year, I notice that through the children,  God has placed great beauty and variety in our classroom.  How fitting, since kindergarten means child's garden!

My husband, Ron, is also a teacher.  We have 3 adult children and are transitioning into the empty nest stage.  We are members of Christ Episcopal Church of Delavan.

September 5, 2008

We are off to a good start! I am pleased with the children's interaction and willingness to participate in a variety of activities. We are busily establishing routines during these first few weeks. Routine goes a long way in making our days go smoothly. Throughout the school year, I will send a weekly note on Fridays to update you and to let you know the coming learning topics. Please check your child's backpack for this kindergarten note.

Bible      Our first unit is such a simple but important topic: Jesus loves me. We will read the Bible story of Jesus and the children. Each unit includes Bible memory work. Please practice these memory verses with your child. We will also study these verses at school. Thank you for your help with this.

Bible Memory

Jesus said, Let the little children come to me.

   Matthew 19:14

Phonics

We begin with the short vowel sounds. Although short vowels are often difficult for kindergarten children to hear, we have a year of review as the children use the vowels in our writing and reading.

Math      Counting forward (to 20) and back (from 10).

Patterns We will begin to observe patterns in our room and to create and name patterns. ( A pattern is named using the lower case letters, beginning with a. For example, a pattern could be ab, abb, aab, abc and etc.)

Science      We made our predicitions and now are observing the changes in our carnations placed into containers of the 6 rainbow colors. This is the first year I have used carnations for this experiment and I have been surprised to observe the results. Your child will bring home a report at the conclusion of our experiment.

Literature      Clifford the Big Red Dog We will enjoy Norman Bridwell's Clifford through books, song and art. You are welcome to share any Clifford books for the week.

Open House

Kindergarten Parent Meeting

Thank you for allowing me to partner with you in the education of your child.

Allergy      One child is allergic to peanuts. Please do not send snack food containing peanuts or peanut oil.
