November 16, 2009
What a busy time we're having in third and fourth grade! Students will be joining their first and second grade counterparts during the month of November to collect canned goods for the Delavan Food Pantry. Items may be placed on the table outside of Mrs .Seitz's classroom. We'll walk over to the food pantry on Friday 11/20 to share our bounty with those who are less fortunate than we are. Thank you for your support of Operation Christmas Child. Your generosity will truly bless the lives of children in other countries!
Next week I will be traveling to Vancouver, WA to see my daughter compete in the college nationals for cross country. I cherish your prayers for safe travels! On Tuesday, November 24, our class will be leaving at 8:45 a.m. to drive to Lake Lawn Resort to decorate a Christmas tree. Parent drivers and chaperones would be appreciated! Please let me know if you're available. Making Christmas ornaments has been a fun way to unwind from the WKCE testing.
We're having fantastic cooperation with the WKCE testing. This is a statewide assessment that is given to third and fourth graders. Testing will continue on 11/17, 11/18, and 11/19. The third grade assessment is significantly shorter, so these students should come prepared with a book to read.
Book order forms have been sent home. Books make excellent Christmas gifts! Many of the books offered by Scholastic are great choices, however, I do not endorse all selections as being appropriate for Christian students. I will be sending out an order on 11/17, so please turn in your selections by that date.
Spelling: : There will be no spelling during the next two weeks due to testing and the Thanksgiving holiday..
Handwriting: Third graders are assigned pages 44-46, and fourth graders are responsible for 42-44. Next week's assignments are pages 47-49 for third grade and pages 45-47 for fourth grade.
Language: We're learning about verbs! Journal writing has been an excellent way to improve our writing skills.
Math: Third graders are moving on to a study of units of measure and area.Fourth graders are beginning an in-depth study of multiplication. Students have brought home math packets to practice their multiplication math facts. Instructions for this activity are included with the packet. Some fourth grade students have mastered the facts and no longer need to practice.
Reading: We are enjoying stories from our CSI reading books. Please remind your child to bring a book for Thursday's silent reading time! Reading goals for the second quarter have been sent home. Reading goals must be completed by January 22. Please let me know if you have any questions about this valuable independent reading program. The Pizza Hut "Book It" materials have arrived. If your child reads 100 pages by the end of November, jot me a note, and I'll give your child a certificate for a free personal pan pizza.
.Social Studies: We are wrapping up our discussion of the Northeast region of the United States. On Tuesday, November 24, students will be tested on chapters 1-4 of their Social Studies book. A study sheet will be sent home to assist students in identifying key concepts. Of course, no November would be complete without discussions about the Pilgrims and the sacrifices they made for their faith!
Bible: Mr. Taylor will be giving a Bible test on November 20. Students will also need to know their Bible memory verse that day.
Have a blessed Thanksgiving!
