Welcome to the Learning Support Room. I am very honored to be a part of Dutton Christian School.
I provide assistance at Dutton Christian in a variety of ways. I have a regular schedule of students that I work with from Kindergarten thru fifth grade. Many of these students come to the LSS room which is one of the portables behind school. For some students, I go into their classroom and work one-on-one or in a small group. I work with students with learning difficulties as well as students who just need extra assistance with reading, writing, or math.
Most of the students I work with have had some form of formal assessment. This assessment begins when regular education teachers contact me with concerns or questions about particular students . We discuss accomodations and interventions that can be implemented within the classroom. These accomodations and interventions are monitored as to their success and if there continues to be difficulties , formal assessment may be suggested to the parents. This testing provides the entire "team of people ( parents, students, teachers, administrators, etc...) with the knowledge of a child's strengths , weaknesses, and recommendations on how we can best provide the child with optimal success in school.
The Dutton Christian Learning Support Service (Resource Room) and the Reading Recovery program are a "branch" of the Christian Learning Center (CLC). Testing and psychological services are also provided to Dutton Christian by CLC. The Christian Learning Center is an organization which provides an array of services to students and adults who experience disabilities or unique gifts. Services include academic special education (K-12) as well as post school adult social and vocational programs. CLC provides these services to schools, individuals and families in Allegan, Kent, Muskegon, Newaygo, and Ottawa counties and also in the states of Wisconsin and Iowa. Without the Christian Learning Center, the resource room and Reading Recovery program would not exist at Dutton Christian. The Christian Learning Center home office is located at Burlingame just north of 44th street on the east side of the road. Look for the green and blue circles on the sign.
Again this year, we will be taking each grade level and splitting all of the students into smaller reading groups. For example, all of the third graders will be split into three or four reading groups. I am very excited to be one of the teachers who will lead one of these groups. I will also be using my website to provide ideas for reading, writing, spelling, math, and homework skills as well as provide educational sites I think are valuable for students to use.
I will be starting resource on Tuesday, Sept. 4th. A letter will go home with my schedule right after Labor Day weekend.. Also, I am devoting more time to checking my email. If you have a question or concern, it is better to email me than call me at school. The phone in the portable is not always working. Thanks.

The Christian Learning Center holds many fundraisers to raise funds to support Christian Special Education. One fundraiser was held this past March called "Superbowl". We had a number of 5th graders raise money for CLC with this event. The kids had a blast and we thank each and every student and family who participated.

Thank you to all who participated !!
