Bird’s Classroom Chronicle October 23, 2006 Volume 12 Issue 9 Est. 1995 Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve
Dear Parents:
I hope that all of your families enjoyed the extended weekend. The MANS conference was an enjoyable experience for me. I was able to hear several good speakers discuss ways to communicate better with students. It was also nice to hang out with my dad on Thursday during the conference. My family also celebrated Kayden’s second birthday on Saturday. It was a great time, and everyone with the gifts he received from them spoiled him! This is going to be a busy week for the students. On Wednesday, October 25, we are going to be taking an all day field trip. In the morning, we will be attending an organ concert in Grand Rapids. After that, we will be visiting a recycling center and a landfill. Since we are going to be away from school all day, the students will need to take a snack along with them on the bus and either a sack lunch or money for lunch for that day. If you have any questions about this day, feel free to contact me at school. This is the last week of the first quarter. All work needs to be turned into me by Friday, October 27 in order to receive credit. Report cards will be sent home next week. I look forward to our conferences in two weeks where we can spend some more time talking about your child and the progress they are making in class!
Schedule for the Week of October 23 to October 27, 2006
BIBLE – The first lessons this week will focus on the transition of leadership from Saul to David. We will also read about the famous battle between David and Goliath, as well as the jealousy that Saul began to form towards David. We have a memory verse this week, and it comes from Psalm 27:1-3. The students need to either say the verse or write it out for me by Friday, November 3.
“The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the Stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid? When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident.”
ENGLISH – We will be finishing up the rough drafts of our personal narratives this week. The final drafts will be due on Wednesday, November 1. Next week, we will start a new grammar unit on nouns.
SPELLING – We are reviewing some of the words we had in our first five units. There will be no spelling test this week.
READING – My reading group will be creating their own candy bars this week in class. They will also design a wrapper for the candy bar and think of a way they could get people to purchase their new creation. We will also be writing some poems about candy and other sweet items. Next week, all the groups will have new instructors as we begin a non-fiction unit.
MATH – This week’s lesson will explain how to figure out logic problems. There will be an assessment over Unit 3 on Friday, October 27.
SCIENCE – We went on a litter walk today to see what kind of trash people throw on the ground. During the rest of the week, we will talk about what types of items people can recycle. We will also be making a poster teaching others about the 3 R’s of trash – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
SOCIAL STUDIES – We are going to begin chapter three, which is about some of the early explorers who visited Michigan and interacted with the tribes who lived here. This week we will read about explorers such as Etienne Brule, Jacques Marquette, and Louis Jolliet.
Quote of the Week – “Have patience with all things, but chiefly have patience with yourself. Do not lose courage in considering your own imperfections, but instantly set about remedying them – every day begin the task anew.” – HYPERLINK "http://www.toinspire.com/author.asp?author=Saint+Francis+De+Sales"Saint Francis De Sales Vaya con Dios,
