Sunday Educational Opportunities

Our educational program is designed to encourage and equip God's children for work and ministry as it nurtures personal relationships and connects Biblical and theological insights to life.

With two sessions of classes on Sunday morning (9:30 and 11:00), elementary children, youth and adults may attend both worship and Sunday School. Nursery care is available at each hour with different curriculum presented during preschool sessions in order to allow our younger children to attend multiple hours. Current adult classes for the fall quarter are listed below.

SESSION #1        9:30 – 10:30 a.m.

ALPHA CLASS – Conference Room
Teachers: Bob Frevert, Dave Holtberg, Tom Gann
Using the David C. Cook Bible in Life Comprehensive Bible Study Series as their study material, the Alpha class will be learning more about three important Old Testament prophets: the call and prophecies of Isaiah, Jeremiah's call for the people to have a heart-to-heart relationship with God and to be in service to others, and Ezekiel calling for accountability of sins, repentance and restoration. The Alpha class is comprised of mainly mid-to-upper senior adults (who are all very young at heart). This class is outstanding in their personal concern for loving, supporting, and caring for one another. As needs and concerns are expressed, living faith through action becomes evidence of the commitment they have to be the body of Christ.

JOY CLASS – Library
Teachers: Patti McDonald, Yvonne Thurmond, Sandi Vickers
We are all at different points on our "faith journey" and this study is relevant to any believer who wants to "swim out a little deeper" in Christ. During the months of September through November the JOY class will be discussing the community of the Church as described in the New Testament. We will begin in Matthew with the birth of Jesus and some of the foundational teachings for his followers. Next we will examine how the community grew and developed in the book of Acts and then we will focus on understanding how the early Church dealt with the conflicts and struggles that came as the Church spread from Jerusalem and Judea to the ends of the earth. This class uses the Present Word Uniform Series studies. No prior study is necessary for a full enjoyment of this class.

THIRSTQUENCHERS – Chapel
Teachers: Lucie Morris, Frank Schillinger, Perry Phillips
The Thirst Quenchers class is made up of all ages in body and soul! We love our Lord and thirst for His Word. We have a great time studying together and benefit from digging deep into the Scriptures for Biblical truth and application. Our current study is the book of Acts with instructions to the apostles to receive the power of the Holy Spirit and witness "to the ends of the earth". One of the greatest strengths of this class is the love and support we share with each other. We begin each class with devotion, led by class members, and a time of praises and prayer requests. This helps us to keep each other lifted up during the week.

THE SHEPHERD'S FLOCK - Room 201
Teachers: Neil and Anna Hook, Scott and Kathy Patman
We have all listened to Dave Letterman recite his top 10 list on the Late Night Show. Did you know Christians have followed a Top 10 List for centuries? Using the book, The Top Ten List for Christians, this study will offer a "contemporary" top ten list of important things for Christians to remember as we make our way through life's journey. We all need guideposts along the way. Author, J.W. Moore, offers God's real priorities for faithful living in 10 witty ways that will encourage us to live in a Christ like manner. Our Class format is conversational learning in a small group setting.

BIBLE SURVEY - Room 202
Teachers: Bob Barton and Evan Gibbs
Whether we’re pushed down or lifted up, faced with deadly choices or seemingly easy ones…you’ll find faith is for everyday living. The structure of this class is discussion oriented for those who feel comfortable doing so, but many prefer to sit quietly and simply absorb the thoughts and ideas offered up by others. We begin each week with a warm cup of coffee, plenty of welcoming smiles and handshakes, followed by a time of sharing and prayer. This class is always excited to see new faces, so we hope you will stop by and become a part of this study. We are currently studying church history and how it shapes our world today.

THEOPHILI (meaning Friends of God) - Room 203-204
Teachers: Cheryl Ireland, Susan Gibbs, Sandy Dyer Shuler
Noted for its friendliness to all who join and its commitment to serious Bible study, this year our lecture/discussion oriented class will be studying the book of II Peter. The Apostle Peter was one of Jesus’ first and closest disciples.
II Peter was written to the church at large, and it strongly denounced false teachers and apostasy. It also takes aim at doubts about the Second Coming and the denial or misuse of authoritative Scripture. We still need to know truth, as apostasy is more rampant today than in the time of Peter. Come grow and learn with us.

SESSION #2     11:00 – 12:00 p.m.

LIVING ON THE EDGE – Room 202
Teachers: Heather and Mike Dapkus, Babs and Glenn Dobbs
Using John Ortberg's DVD presentation, The Life You've Always Wanted, participants will discover the skills essential to "running the marathon" in the Christian life:  slowing down, celebrating joy, practicing prayer, studying Scripture, and trusting God.  Learn new insights in each upbeat humorous segment to help growth in maturity in Christ.  Classroom discussion will follow segment viewing.  You'll find this class to have lots of lively discussion, joy and laughter to go along with our study.

GOOD NEWS – Room 203/204
Teachers: David Hill, Vic Macias, Jim Tucker
Presbyterians: Who We Are, What We Believe - The Good News class is beginning this new study that will take the group through Christmas. We all know the basics, but do we know enough to share our Presbyterian theology and our Christian faith with others? In this study we will focus on the Bible, the cross, reformed theology, and of course, predestination. Each week the class will be structured around several key questions about our beliefs. We will use the Bible, the Book of Order, the Book of Confessions, Donald K. McKim's book, Presbyterian Questions, Presbyterian Answers, and a variety of reference sources. Most sessions are structured around small group assignments, small and large group discussion, Bible reading, and short lectures.

BIBLE SURVEY – Room 206
Teachers:  Nan Gordon, Steve Haack

An in-depth Bible discovery class that will challenge members as their knowledge and personal growth is enhanced through study and discussion.  This class provides opportunity to see the amazing way the tapestry of God's Word is woven throughout Scripture to form a beautiful and complete story of His love and grace.  After an extensive study of Isaiah, teacher Steve Haack is quoted saying, ". . . we now want to sit at the feet of our Savior and listen intently to his words."
