The members of First Presbyterian Church are involved in many local ministries, including:
Douglas County Habitat for Humanity: This ministry helps low income families buy homes interest-free. Through financial and in–kind donations, and “sweat equity” of the potential home buyers and volunteers, houses are built for families in need.
Douglas County Shelter for the Homeless: This transitional shelter for homeless families and individuals in Douglas County helps residents become stable and self-sufficient. The shelter was established, and the house donated by First Presbyterian Church in 1985. It is now an ecumenical ministry.
First Sundays: The first Sunday of every month is Local Outreach Sunday. Baskets are placed at the sanctuary doors to receive donations for those in need in Douglas County. All worshipers are invited to donate non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, paper products, baby and adult diapers, household goods, appliances, furniture, etc. If you have a large item, such as furniture, complete a form at the welcome center and a committee member will arrange for pickup from your home.
The Gift Of Love provides for the needs of low income children. Seasonally, the church collects donations of school supplies, school clothes, winter coats, etc.
The Good Samaritan Center is a cooperative church ministry established in 1983 to meet spiritual and material needs in Douglas County. The center provides food, assistance with utility bills, and prescription medication. Transients receive help with gas, food and occasionally motel accommodations.
Loving Hands Ministry: Donations of clothing and furniture are given to needy families in Douglas County.
Pregnancy Resource Center: This ministry offers pregnancy testing, pregnancy counseling and maternity clothing to women in crisis pregnancy situations. Also offered are baby diapers, clothing, equipment and furniture.
The Hope Project provides job skills training to women who are currently receiving public assistance.
