Stained Glass Windows

We are grateful to church member and artist Louise Atwood, who devoted hundreds of hours to this non-profit contribution. Her work can be seen also in the First Church of Conyers.

The design and production of the sanctuary's eleven stained glass windows began in the spring of 1986 and was completed in the fall of 1989. Many of the designs are composites inspired by other artwork, although the empty cross crucifixion is the artist's own design. Members of the congregation participated in the design process by suggesting window themes.

Each of the sanctuary windows is framed by an arch, suggesting a cathedral image. Important Christian concepts are expressed in symbols used in the bottom portion of many of the windows, including such familiar symbols as the dove, the lamb, and the cross. A recurring motif is the circle of leaves, representing eternal life. Entwined with the leaves are the Cherokee Rose, the Georgia state flower, representing spring and the beginning of life, while grapes and golden leaves represent fall and the harvest, or fullness of life.

In 2002, Louise designed a round window for the JeffordsCenter, featuring stories from the life of Jesus.  In 2003, she designed a new window for the chapel, which had just been refurbished. The window features beams of light and a descending dove, representing God's gift of the Holy Spirit.
