Sanctity of Life

Established by Scripture & Secular writings

Created, Loved and Called by God. – Job 33:4; Ps 100:3; Ps 119:73; Is 44:24; Is 49:1; Col 1:16; Rev 4:11
Development within the womb – Job 31:15; Ps 22:9-10; Ps 139:13-16; Is 44:2;
Jer 1:15; Lk 1:41-44

  • The fetus is a human being. Genetically, he is complete (Dr. J. Lejeune, European geneticist).
  • We no longer need to belabor the questions of when human life begins; it begins incontrovertibly at the union of sperm and ovum (Dr. E. Diamond, Loyola University Medical School).

Certainly, then, abortion is the killing of innocent human beings.

Pro-life Issues – PCUSA

Christians, like many others, are influenced by messages from a wide variety of sources, and often adopt beliefs and practices from the world around us. Scripture says, “Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong.”, Ex 23:2.

  • Abortion, for any reason, at any time during pregnancy is a covered service of the PC(USA) medical benefits plan. Our churches pay for this unless they have been approved for the “Relief of Conscience” provision.
  • The PC(USA) Washington Office refused to represent the more recently approved denominational positions on abortion by recently condemning the Supreme Court decision on partial birth abortion.
  • The Presbyterian Health, Education and Welfare Assn. was ordered to open membership to Presbyterians Pro-Life and to date, PPL has not been allowed to join. PHEWA continues to receive Per Capita support.
  • PC(USA) continues to support and is a member of The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice whose mission statement says “…While our member organizations are religiously and theologically diverse, they are unified in the commitment to preserve reproductive choice as a basic part of religious liberty.”
