Mission Statement:   The mission of the Matthews HELP Center is to care for those in our community by providing programs and services that will meet life’s basic needs, and by connecting those in need with resources that improve quality of life

Background:  Matthews HELP Center is a non-profit, 501©)(3) organization. It offers Programs and Services for Residents of the Greater Matthews Area.

The Programs and Services include:

  • Crisis Assistance: Offering assistance with food, clothing, rent, utilities and medical bills after a staff evaluation of need.
  • Information and Referral: Offering links to other sources of assistance.
  • Community Connection: Coordination between community resources, contributors and residents in need. Examples are giving for Back to School Clothing, School Supplies, Thanksgiving Meals, Christmas Gifts, Easter Baskets and other special occasions.
  • Health Related Services: Registered Nurse at the Center on Friday Mornings, Medical Equipment to lend
  • Food and Nutrition Services: Food Pantry; Meals delivered by volunteers to the homebound. (Meals are provided through Mecklenburg County Senior Nutrition Program.)
  • Thrift Shop: Donated clothing and Household items available at minimal costs.
  • Back to School Program - The Matthews HELP Center works with the Kiwanis club to provide new clothing and school supplies to area children who are in need.
  • Holiday Adoption Program - The Matthews HELP Center identifies needy families in the area and matches them with various donors to provide holiday gifts and food.
  • Bounce Back Backpack Program - Matthews HELP Center has recently implemented a new program to meet the needs of hungry children by providing nutritious and easy-to-prepare food to take home on weekends when other resources are not available.  Every Friday, “Bounce Back Backpacks” sends food-filled backpacks to area elementary schools.  School psychologists determine which families need them most, and they are sent home with students that weekend.  The backpacks “bounce back” on Monday, are filled with more food and sent out again the next Friday.

How you can HELP the HELP Center:

  • Bring a donation of non-perishable food items (always a huge need), Clothing, household items, books, toys, baby items, toiletries or paper goods. (Donations that are NOT taken are computers, large appliances or large pieces of furniture.) If they can not use your donation, it is taken to the Salvation Army.
  • Give of your Time by Volunteering in the Thrift ship, Delivering Meals and/or serving as Receptionist.
  • Make a Financial Contribution to:

          PO Box 91
          Matthews, NC  28106
  • Shop in the Thrift Shop. All shoppers are welcome, and the proceeds support the HELP Center’s Programs and Services.
