A Christmas Poem for the Kids
And the Soft of Heart
Listen, kids, I have a quiz for you!
Do not cry or say “Boo-hoo.”
I know you’re on your Christmas break,
But this test is easy to take.
One might say it is open Book,
If in the Bible you should look.
So listen closely to the questions I ask
To answer right is your Christmas Eve task.
A long time ago and far away
A babe was born on Christmas day.
His name was Jesus and he was the Son
Of Mary but also the Lord, the Holy One.
But here is my question, Why did he come?
What need have we of God’s only Son?
Why did he have to go to the cross?
What could have demanded so great a cost?
Ah, I think I have the answer now!
He came to earth to show us how
To love and be nice and God to obey.
Each minute, each second of every day.
There is no doubt, His model is ample,
In other words he came as an example.
NO!
I believe you are right as I ponder,
My heart has a tendency to wander
Into sin and to disobey
The commands God gave to show the way.
His example is great there is no doubt
But I have no power to live it out.
As I think again the answer arises.
This must be it!
My brain surmises;
Did Jesus come because we are pretty good?
Do we just need a boost to live as we should?
Did he come to give us a helping hand?
That must be it, God’s gracious plan!
NO!
I think you’re right to answer, No!
This answer just isn’t so.
A helping hand is so nice
But not with hearts as cold as ice.
Our circumstances are much more dire.
It’s not a helper we need to hire.
Ok, this time I’m on the right track
Sin is the key and that’s a fact!
Jesus came our sin to forgive
No hell for me, in heaven I’ll live!
So my record’s clean, my minds at ease
Now I can do whatever I please!
No need to get anxious or to worry
Jesus bore God’s righteous fury.
NO!
Freed from sin to sin some more.
That makes no sense if we adore
Jesus and His holiness.
So what’s the answer to this test?
Not example nor help nor even pardon
Can fix someone whose heart is hardened
To God and to His Son;
A greater work must be done.
For we have hearts that delight in sin,
That love the things of the world we’re in
But God’s worth we do not see
Nor his children do we want to be.
Forgiveness we need that is right
But God needs to shine His light
Into our hearts that we might prize
His beauty in the face of Christ.
So Christ was born to take our sin;
But also came our hearts to win,
That God might become our precious treasure.
So serving him is now our pleasure.
This must be it.
So can you guess
The answer to our question is finally . . . .
YES!
Merry Christmas to all our Safe Harbor Family,
Pastor James
