HISTORY OF NORTHSIDE BAPTIST CHURCH

75 YEARS OF SERVICE

In 1921, a lady by the name of Mrs. J.J. Potter started some Sunday School work in the North section of  Winchester. She worked under the supervision of the First Baptist Church. Mrs. Potter and Miss Fannie Bush held a Vacation Bible School. A tent meeting was held with Bro. A.C. Hutson, Sr. preaching. Eighteen people came on profession of faith and eight came by letter. These people were baptized at the First Baptist Church. The First Baptist Church appointed a committee to meet with the people on the north side of town to discuss organizing a church. The people were enthused and wanted a church. The work had been going on for several years.  Meetings were held at the old North Park School House on the Mt. Sterling Road.

On August 25, 1928 a meeting was held at the old school house. Present were members from Ephesus, Corinth, and the First Baptist Churches and a new church body was organized. In 1929 a committee was formed to look for a location for this newly formed church. The property, at the corner of Winn Avenue and Pendleton Street was purchased from Robert Henry for $4,200.00. The first service was held at this new location on June 9, 1929 by Bro. A.C. Hutson. Brother Hutson and his son pastured the church until 1930.  There was a business meeting held to name the church Northside Baptist and this was agreed to by all.

Northside Baptist was a mission to  First Baptist Church of East Lexington Avenue. The Church provided a salary and a house on Winn Avenue for the pastor. Northside Baptist was in the Friendship Association at this time and later became part of the Boones Creek Association.
