Deacons

The Deacon Board of HPPC is a very dedicated group, commissioned by the elders of our church to extend care and comfort to the congregation. Every month Deacons make dozens of personal "one on one" contacts with members of our church family. Duties include hospital calls, visits to our home-bound members, extending birthday greetings to children and "over 80's", preparing communion for worship services, delivery of baby crosses to newborns, and offering support during bereavement.

Wednesday Family Night

Wednesday Night Family Fellowship starts at 6:00 and runs from October through April. Our HPPC cooks provide a wonderful meal for $4.00. The opportunity for fellowship around the table is enjoyed by all.  Immediately following the meal we may have guest speakers, bible study, musical entertainment, or an interesting discussion on a variety of topics.

Please call the church office, 288-5703, to make reservations. Please click on "Church News" on the menu column to the left, then go to "Wednesday Night Dinner" to see the current menu.

Presbyterian Women of the Congregation

This organization is part of the Presbyterian Church's worldwide women's ministry. Three groups, or circles, have monthly meetings with Bible study and mission planning. Their support extends from Des Moines area charities such as Cross Ministries, to national organizations such as the Buckhorn Children's Center in Kentucky, to aiding with overseas hospital supplies. These busy ladies provide school supplies for needy children, give May Baskets to Home Bound members, and host the annual Fall Bazaar and Fall Dinner events.

Food Pantry

HPPC is a faithful and longtime supporter the Des Moines Area Religious Council's Food Pantry.  Each month a particular food item or group is promoted for giving to the Food Pantry.  We also encourage monetary gifts.  A grocery cart is located in Fellowship Hall for donation collections.  Members of our congregation take the food and money gifts to DMARC's Food Pantry monthly.

Mitten Tree

Let's fill up the Mitten Tree with mittens, gloves, scarves, and hats to send to CROSS Ministries.  Plenty of warm winter wear is always needed for the children.

Mile of Pennies

Mile of Pennies supports World Vision

Highland Park Presbyterian Church has had a long history of collecting pennies and coins to support children around the world.  Beginning August 2007, the congregation has had an opportunity to "go the extra mile" and collect enough pennies to reach a mile.  Decorated cloth bags for collecting pennies have been handed out and more are available.  How many pennies does it take to make a mile, 2 miles, 5 miles......?  Bring your pennies to church and fill the penny jar during our offering time.

Our Mile of Pennies helps to keep 4 children in school.  HPPC  has been a sponsor since 1988.  Not only does the church funding help with education it helps with community educational opportunities.  I will provide more information in future updates.

The four sponsored children are:

Abdulnahid Ismail, Gobantie ADP Project, Nairobi, Kenya

Jerry Limprevil, Bassin Diaman Cd Project, Haiti

Nur Ayman Abul'nin, Rafah ADP Project,Jerusalem, West Bank Gaza

Mukti Begum, Dhaka Shishu ADP Project, Bangladesh.

If you've received your monthly Highlander, you may have read about the World Vision Iowa Hope project focusing on Ethiopia.  As part of that project, our church has been given the names and information of 10 children from Ethiopia to adopt.  Monthly sponsorship is $35 a month, and provides the following things to the children and their community:

·        clean water

·        nutritious food

·        health care

·        education

·        HIV-prevention and life-skills training based on abstinence and faithfulness

·        Spiritual nurturing

·        Care for sick or dying parents

·        Counseling

The benefits you help provide extend to each child's family, their community, and other children in need.  That's because World Vision plans and works alongside local community members to find solutions that will change the future for their children, and their children's children.

I encourage you to sponsor a child for the above reasons, but also because in blessing others, you will be blessed as well.

I leave you with a verse from James 1:27, "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this:  To look after orphans and widows in their distress"

Hunger Hike

The Des Moines Area Hunger Hike has always been a mission that is near and dear to HPPC's heart. For many years we have supported the Hunger Hike effort with the hikers and sponsors it takes to make this event successful year after year.  In 2008 HPPC was the recipient of the Traveling Bowl Award.   This is an award given by the Des Moines Area Hunger Hike council to recognize superior efforts in feeding the hungry, and will be in our possession for one year.  The bowl is a symbol of what is great about HPPC: Dedication to Mission and a unified willingness to help people in need and do God's work.

"We walk that they may eat..."

On September 10, 2009, HPPC hosted the Hunger Hike Team Development Seminar.  This is an event where representatives from churches with a record of successful Hunger Hike participation share their ideas and methods with churches who are interested in improving their own Hunger Hike experience.  The event also featured guest speakers from Shalom Zones Ministries and Church World Services which are both recipients of Hunger Hike funds.

On October 12, 2009, Seventeen hikers proudly wearing their HPPC sweatshirts walked the five mile Hunger Hike on a very crisp Sunday afternoon.  For their efforts they were treated to Carousel rides at Union Park at the half-way point, as well as treats, beverages, and live music at the Historical Building following the hike.  A great time was had by all and once again HPPC raised a lot of money for a great cause.  Special thanks Pastor Dawn for helping with the clean up at the Historical Building afterward.

Souper Bowl of Caring

HPPC has proudly supported the Souper Bowl of Caring for over a decade now.  On Super Bowl Sunday our youth collect donations for the Souper Bowl of Caring and donate the funds to the DMARC Food Pantry.  It is a rewarding and exiciting fundraising effort, as the youth are encouraged to wear their favorite team apparel on Souper Bowl Sunday.
