Pass the Animal Crackers, Please!
It was time to celebrate at the Caldwell United Methodist Church Sunday, January 28, when Rev. Glenn Amend said, "Please pass the animal crackers!"
Rev. Amend, a retired U.M.C. elder who served in the Kansas East Conference, challenged the Caldwell congregation in 2002 to "Get Glenn's Goat." Wayne Bumgardner made a "goat bank" that thrived on quarters "fed" to it every Sunday by young and old.
That first year $2,615.15 was sent to Heifer Project International to "buy Glenn's goats." With $3,613.04 donated in 2003, an Ark was a reality and the goat never went hungry again. There was enough for another Ark with $2,645.00 in 2004 and $2,501.77 in 2005.
But it was time to celebrate Sunday when Glenn announced that $9,375.00 had been contributed in 2006! In five years, the congregation had contributed $20,749.96 and it was time to celebrate by enjoying a treat of animal crackers!
In addition to contributions in the Goat Bank, at the beginning of each month those celebrating birthdays fill the basket on the altar with "birthday money." No doubt another Ark can be a reality in 2007.
