WHO WE ARE

Just as people choose a name in order to describe who they are, our church's name, Lake Worth Christian Reformed Church, says a lot about us.  Our identity is captured in our beliefs and ministry.  We invite you to take a look at us.

Christian.  We are joined together with fellow Christians who accept the teachings of the Bible as expressed in the Apostles', Nicene, and Athanasian creeds.  We teach that:

  • The Bible is the only reliable guide to what we should believe and how we should conduct our lives (2 Timothy 3:14-17).  Through his Word, God's Spirit speaks to us so that we may know him and be equipped to carry out his purposes in our world.
  • God, by his grace, rescues us from sin and judgment through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, his son (John 3:16).  This supreme act of kindness makes it possible for us to live in right relationship with God, free from the guilt of sin.  This free gift transforms our lives and motivates us to live for him.

Reformed.  We stand in the tradition of the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth-century.  John Calvin, along with others, worked hard to return Christianity to its biblical roots.  Our teachings are similar to Presbyterian and other Reformed churches with whom we enjoy fellowship.  We share three confessions with other churches of the Reformed faith: The Belgic Confession, The Heidelberg Catechism and The Canons of Dort.  We share some distinctive teachings with other churches in the Reformed tradition including:

  • Our world belongs to God!  We have hope because God is in control, working his purposes out of his sovereign plan (Colossians 1:15-17).  This gives us confidence to do our Lord's work in this world!
  • God receives us as members of his family and grants us the precious promise of eternal life (Ephesians 1:3-5).  We live in partnership (covenant) with God.  We celebrate this partnership in the sacraments of baptism and the Lord's Supper.  This partnership extends to our children (Acts 2:39).  By way of a public profession of faith (Romans 10:9-10), they, along with new believers join in proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ everywhere (Matthew 28:18-20).
  • Jesus is not only our crucified Savior who rose form the dead, but he is also our ascended Lord who reigns over the entire creation (Ephesians 1:22).  Through God's Word and Spirit, Jesus is at work in us.  In our worship, work, relationships and recreation he calls us to be his disciples (Colossians 3:17).
  • God assures us that we are safe in the protecting and sheltering care of our Good Shepherd.  No on can tear us from Jesus' hand (John 10:27-29), not even our own failures or the weakness of our faith (Luke 22:31-32).

Church.  God's Spirit gathers us together for support and service in our community and beyond.  For over fifty years we have been praying and working in Lake Worth, Florida to be "the salt of the earth" and "the light of the world" (Matthew 5:13-14).  We have opportunities to work together in order to make the world a better place to live through the power of Jesus Christ.
